Kalutara eatery owner , who exploited Belgium traveler arrested

The Tourist Police today (18) arrested a 60-year-old eatery owner, who brought great scandal to the country by shamelessly tricking a tourist into selling an Ulundu Wada and Tea for one thousand rupees, ( Nearly 3 USD).

According to an email complaint to the Moragolla Tourist Police regarding this incident, this person has been arrested.

This incident happened on February 9, 2024. Facing the incident is a Belgian named Tim Tent who was making a travel video about his visit to Sri Lanka.

The traveler who was walking on the road and filming the environment was taken into the hotel and given an Ulundu wada (An Indian short eat) and Tea. This vendor set a price of one thousand rupees but he was challenged by the tourist claiming that it was too much. After realizing the fact the eatery owner reduced two hundred rupees to 800 rupees.

Tim Tent, Belgium National then stepped out from the place and asked a passer-by about the unit price and confirmed that he was deceived.

“You are not honest. The problem is not the money. There must be a principle for a price…”  Tent said.

This video was released to the world. The video is being circulated on the country’s social media with strong criticism.

Based on a complaint received, the Moragolla Tourist Police arrested this Palathota resident today (18) and handed him over to the Kalutara Police.

The investigation has revealed that the suspect is an acquaintance of the area and has cheated foreigners visiting the restaurant to get money.

The suspect will be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
