Jaffna Mayor Vishwalingam Maniwannan today (Oct. 10) said that his arrest by the Police Terrorism Unit was illegal and that he would take legal action in this regard.
He was speaking after being released on bail by the Jaffna High Court.

“My only goal is to keep Jaffna clean. For that I also went down to the road at night and cleaned the sewers. And as mayor, if there is anything I can do to keep Jaffna clean, I will do it. ”
“I do not want to divide this country or revive the existing organizations. What I did was to set up a separate force to work for the cleanliness of the city according to the powers vested with the council.
“The police Terrorist Investigation Division wanted to prove that the clothes these persons wearing were the clothes of the LTTE police. This was widely publicized by the Southern media and Sinhala Buddhist forces. They say that this dress is the dress of the LTTE police because of its color. Then the uniform of the Air Force is the same. We have to work against that too. Many other private security forces also use their uniforms in this color .Tamils wear this color is wrong. This is the biggest injustice. ”
“We now need to understand how wrong and illegal it is to arrest a mayor for such a small thing. A number of countries around the world have issued statements condemning this illegal arrest .I will also take legal action in this regard.
