The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was in remand custody over his alleged involvement in the 2022 attack on the ‘Gota Go Gama’ protest site at Galle Face.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura issued the order after considering submissions made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and defense counsel.
Tennakoon was released on two personal sureties of Rs. 1 million each. He was also imposed with a travel ban and instructed not to influence witnesses in the case.
The Magistrate further directed that Tennakoon must appear before the CID and the court whenever summoned and cooperate with the ongoing investigations. She cautioned that failure to comply would result in the cancellation of bail and his return to remand custody.
The case was scheduled to be taken up again on September 3.
