Reliable sources report that suspended IGP Deshabandhu Tennakoon, who was ordered to be arrested by the court over a shooting incident in Weligama, W15 Hotel is expected to surrender to the police today (03).
Sources further speculate that he may surrender after being admitted to a hospital.
When asked about the suspended IGP, Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated:
“The police are looking for the former IGP. We can only ask him to surrender to the police, please because it is not good for the police to chase after a former IGP so much. It is shameful.”
On Friday, the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest order for Deshabandhu Tennakoon. Since then, he has not been seen. Police searched two of his properties but failed to locate him. His disappearance was also discussed in Parliament.
The court order against Tennakoon is related to the investigation into a shooting that occurred in front of a hotel in Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023.
Alongside him, the court also ordered the arrest of eight others, including the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo Crimes Division, Anslam de Silva.
Tennakoon faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Following a police request to the Matara Magistrate, a foreign travel ban has also been imposed on him.
