Delta (B.1. 617) recently detected in Dematagoda which was originated in India is said to have a positivity rate five times higher among youth than seniors, researchers suggest. The Delta variant too described as the world-dominating Covid variant by the chief scientist of WHO, Dr, Saumya Swaminathan.
According to WHO It is estimated that 99% of all cases of Covid infection in Britain today are caused by the Delta Covid variant, which has increased the number of cases in the UK to 34,000 in a single week.
Center for Infectious Diseases Research Policy of the University of Minnesota published a report based on the findings says the researchers of College of Imperial, London showed that COVID-19 infections in England surged from May 20 to Jun 7, with a doubling time of 11 days and an estimated R (reproductive) number of 1.44. Doubling time is the number of days before coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, or deaths doubled, and R indicates how many people, on average, catch the virus from an infected person.
Their findings establish that young people are behind the surge, with a 5-fold higher rate of COVID-19 test positivity among children. They have segmented youth into two groups as 5 to 12 years of age adult 18 to 24. These groups have indicated that the positivity rate 5 times higher than n those 65 or older. People younger than 50 were 2.5 times more likely to be infected than older people. Although the researchers noted that infections seem to be growing at a comparable rate in both age groups.
