The daughter of Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital Specialist neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, who was arrested in connection with an incident where she allegedly threatened officials of the Bribery Commission, has been ordered to be remanded until July 9th.
The daughter of remanded neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne was arrested this morning (07) by the Keselwatte Police on charges of threatening officials attached to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
Police said the 21-year-old woman, a resident of the Kurunduwatte area, is accused of having made threats against CIABOC officers in connection with the ongoing investigations into her mother’s case. She is expected to be produced before court today.
Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, a well-known consultant neurosurgeon attached to the Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital, was arrested last month by CIABOC on charges of soliciting a bribe. According to the Commission, she was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs. 3 million from the family of a patient in return for performing urgent brain surgery.
Investigations revealed that the complaint had been lodged by relatives of a critically ill patient who claimed that Dr. Wijeratne had demanded the payment to prioritise the surgery. CIABOC officials carried out a sting operation and arrested her while she was allegedly accepting the money at her private consultation office.
Following her arrest, Dr. Wijeratne was remanded by the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court. The case sparked wide public attention as she is one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent neurosurgeons, serving both at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital and the National Hospital in Colombo, and known for her expertise in complex neurological surgeries.
Meanwhile, CIABOC sources said that the arrest of her daughter was carried out following complaints that she had issued verbal threats against officers handling her mother’s investigation, allegedly attempting to obstruct the legal process.
Keselwatte Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
