Officials of National Hospital, Kandy have confirmed the death of a 65-year-old man from the Atgala area of Gampola, who passed away yesterday (22) due to a lung infection with symptoms resembling those of Covid-19, underwent a postmortem P.C.R. test, confirming his infection with the virus. It is the first officially confirmed Covid-related death at the hospital in nearly a year.

Hospital sources disclosed that the deceased’s symptoms were initially suspected to be indicative of Covid-19, prompting the P.C.R. test. The results, received today (23), have validated those suspicions. The unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by the virus, even as the world grapples with evolving variants.

Professor Chandima Jeevandara, Director of Allergy and Immunology at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura’s Biosciences, recently voiced concerns about the potential presence of the Omicron JN.1 variant in the country. While there is no definitive scientific confirmation, Prof. Jeevandara speculates, based on global conditions, including the situation in India, that the influenza-like illnesses currently prevalent may be linked to the Covid-19 Omicron JN.1 variant.

Two days ago, Prof. Jeevandara took to social media platform Twitter, urging caution. In a note posted on X (Former Twitter), he recommended that individuals frequenting crowded and poorly ventilated places, as well as those who are immunocompromised and adults, should wear face masks as a preventive measure. The speculation about the potential presence of the Omicron JN.1 variant raises concerns about the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures in the face of evolving viral threats.
