Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena today (02) issued summons to the lawyers of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena President’s Counsel Riyansi Arsakularatne, and his junior counsel, Udara Muhandiramge.
The two lawyers have been ordered to appear before the court and give evidence in connection with the inquiry into the death of Kapila Chandrasena.
The order was made when the Magistrate’s inquiry into the incident was taken up for the seventh consecutive day before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Earlier, appearing on behalf of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the two lawyers concerned, BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya requested the court to consider whether it was necessary to summon them as witnesses.
When the case was called today, Magistrate Amarasena stated that the two lawyers would be called to testify under Section 370(5) of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.
The Magistrate further noted that the witnesses have the right not to disclose any advice or information exchanged between the deceased and his lawyers, in accordance with the relevant Supreme Court rules governing legal professional privilege.
Further examination of evidence in the inquiry is scheduled for June 5.
