Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena officially signed the Online Security Bill today (01), marking its passage into law after a two-day parliamentary debate on January 23 and 24, 2024. The bill will now be enacted as the Internet Security Act No. 9 of 2024.
Despite the legislative approval, civil organizations and social activists vehemently protested against the bill. They argue that the Online Security Bill (OSB) poses a severe threat to the right to express opinions and should have been outright rejected. Criticism revolves around the perceived lack of stakeholder engagement and the sudden passage of the bill without considering recommendations from the Supreme Court.
The controversial nature of the legislation has also drawn international attention, with the United States of America expressing deep concern over its approval. The global response adds to the ongoing discourse surrounding the potential impact of the Internet Security Act on freedom of expression.
