The Ministry of Health has initiated the reinstatement of Dr. Vijith Gunasekara as the head of the Medical Research Institute, a move that follows his removal from the position of Chairman of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority last Tuesday (07).
Dr. Gunasekara faced allegations of submitting false documents during the importation of medicines, leading to his removal by the Board of Directors of the Medicines Regulatory Authority.
The decision to remove Dr. Vijith Gunasekara stemmed from various incidents, including the submission of fake documents related to the importation of immunoglobulin drugs to Sri Lanka. Currently subject to a foreign travel ban in connection with the immunoglobulin drug fraud, he is also accused of destroying crucial documents belonging to the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.
Dr. Gunasekara’s removal was enforced after he declined multiple requests to voluntarily step down as the Chairman, opting to remain in office against the Board’s decision.
The leader of the opposition raised concerns in parliament yesterday about Dr. Gunasekara’s new appointment, prompting the Health Minister to assure that he would investigate the matter and take legal action if deemed necessary.
