Can Sri Lanka Resolve Its Coconut Crisis?

Sri Lanka’s coconut crisis is deepening, with prices reaching unprecedented heights and supply shortages forcing delays in key auctions. Once a major exporter of coconuts, the island nation is now on the brink of becoming an importer as the local coconut market faces severe disruptions.

The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) announced that for the second consecutive week, the coconut auction has been postponed due to a lack of nuts. “There weren’t enough (coconuts) to have an auction,” a CDA official confirmed, highlighting the extent of the shortage. This follows a troubling trend from December when the weekly coconut auction was also called off due to inadequate supply.

Retail prices have surged, with coconuts now selling for 185 to 190 rupees each at supermarkets, leaving consumers and businesses alike feeling the strain. When the coconut auction resumed in the first week of January, prices soared by 18.3 percent, reaching an average of 129,699 rupees per 1,000 nuts — the highest price ever recorded.

The crisis is the result of a combination of factors, including aging coconut trees, erratic weather conditions, and a lack of sufficient replanting. These challenges have severely impacted local production, and with demand showing no signs of slowing, Sri Lanka is facing a future where it may no longer be able to rely on its once-booming coconut industry.

This drastic shift threatens to turn Sri Lanka from a net exporter of coconuts to a nation dependent on imports, further exacerbating economic challenges. The coconut sector, vital to both local livelihoods and various industries, urgently needs intervention to prevent even steeper price hikes and supply shortages in the months ahead.

Sri Lanka has long been a key player in the global coconut market, with the industry contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. Coconut-related products such as copra, coconut oil, desiccated coconut, and activated carbon form an essential part of Sri Lanka’s agricultural export portfolio. In recent years, Sri Lanka has been earning substantial revenue from coconut exports, with estimates suggesting that the country generates over $400 million annually from coconut products.

Key importer destinations include India, the United States, the Middle East, and parts of Europe, including the United Kingdom and Germany.
