The Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) commenced an investigation yesterday (18) following a complaint regarding alleged sexual misconduct and assaults among a group of students of the Faculty of Management and Business Studies at the University of Jaffna, reportedly under the guise of a party.
According to information received, the alleged incidents took place about two weeks ago during a party held at the university. It is also reported that an assault later occurred between two groups of students.
After receiving the information, the police informed the university administration to conduct an internal inquiry and submit a report. However, as the University of Jaffna had not initiated an investigation into the matter, the Kopai Police referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry. The CID has now begun its investigation.
When police officers attempted to obtain statements from members of the Jaffna University Governing Body and the authorities of the two faculties where the alleged incidents took place, the officials reportedly postponed giving statements, citing their busy schedules due to the ongoing 40th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Jaffna.
