The New York Times reveals that a Chinese-owned spy center in Cuba has maintained a zone that can jam electronic signals from nearby US military and commercial buildings.
According to the New York Times, a senior official of the Biden administration in the United States has said that this center has been operational since 2019.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence, said the spy camp was an issue the Biden administration inherited from former US President Donald Trump. A related official has said that after Joe Biden took office as the President of the United States, the President has been informed about China’s plan to establish places similar to the spying center established in Cuba around the world.
The official said the Biden administration is trying to thwart China’s efforts to gain a foothold in the region and elsewhere, mainly by engaging diplomatically with countries that could create leverage for Beijing.
In a joint statement Thursday, U.S. Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, and the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman and the panel’s top Republican, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, said they were “deeply disturbed” by reports that Cuba and China are working together.
