The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka has acknowledged that some Chinese nationals are engaging in cyber crimes within the country, attributing this to Sri Lanka’s strategic location and the close ties between the two nations. In a recent statement, the embassy admitted that these online fraud activities have damaged China’s international reputation.
The embassy emphasized the importance of developing joint China-Sri Lanka laws to combat online fraud effectively. The statement also noted that recent arrests of Chinese nationals involved in online scams have strained the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
The Chinese government has expressed its willingness to assist Sri Lankan authorities in conducting necessary investigations to address this issue. According to the embassy, the primary targets of these online scams are often Chinese citizens themselves.
The statement further highlighted that cyber fraud by Chinese nationals is not a new issue, noting that such activities have been ongoing since the 1990s. The Chinese government acknowledged the need to take stronger measures to curb these crimes.
