Chairman of the Elections Comission Mahinda Deshapriya says that the complete rule of the country by the will of the majority or representing the will of the majority as the truth, has led to the destruction of third world countries.

He was speaking at a workshop on the true meaning of democracy.

What are most of the people in our country saying now? That Democracy is useless. Those who say no to democracy in our country and those who act against the Constitution are traitors.

What is democracy? Everyone says it is the people being ruled by the people themselves. How do we choose that? By will of the majority. But is democracy the will of the majority?

In a boys school for example who is the majority? It is the female teachers. If we have a vote on what to wear the Teachers will  all say you have to wear a sari. What will happen to the male teachers? As they are not the majority even they will have to wear a saree. Even any monks in the school will have to as it is the will of the majority.

“Democracy is not the will of the majority. Implementing the will of the majority without prejudice to the minority is democracy. The main reason for the destruction of Third World countries is that  the will of the majority is taken as the truth and the country is fully ruled by the will of the majority and not allowing for any opposing voices” he said.
