Engineers managing the Castlery Reservoir, have reported that the reservoir began discharging water since yesterday (22) midnight. This marks the first time in three years that the Castlery Reservoir has initiated a discharge, with water being released through 13 gates, each equipped with 2 ½ trenches.
Simultaneously, the Wimalasurendra Reservoir, located downstream from Castlery, has also commenced discharging water since yesterday midnight. The discharge from both reservoirs has contributed to an increase in the water level of the Kelani River.
The engineers note that the water level of the Maussakale Reservoir has reached an overflow level of 03 feet. With elevated water levels in both Castlery and Wimalasurendra Reservoirs, hydroelectric power generation at Wimalasurendra, Canyon, Lakshapana, Nava Lakshapana, and Polpitiya hydroelectric power plants is operating at maximum capacity.
