Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie have decided to separate after 18 years of marriage, following “meaningful and difficult conversations.” The couple made the announcement on Instagram, stating their intention to remain “a close family with deep love and respect.”

The couple tied the knot in Montreal in 2005 and has three children together – Xavier (15), Ella-Grace (14), and Hadrien (nine). In a statement from Mr. Trudeau’s office, it was clarified that although they have signed a separation agreement, they will continue to make public appearances together.

While Sophie Grégoire Trudeau will no longer participate in official duties, the couple is committed to ensuring all legal and ethical steps are taken regarding their decision to separate. Canadian media reports indicate that Sophie will no longer receive government assistance in arranging her own appearances.

As the couple navigates this challenging time, they have requested privacy for the well-being of their children. Despite being seen together less frequently in recent years, they have maintained a united front during significant events, such as the coronation of King Charles III in May and hosting US President Joe Biden in Canada in March.

Their love story has been publicized since Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister in 2015. A high-profile Vogue spread showcased their relationship, with Sophie sharing that Justin had once said, “I’m 31 years old, and I’ve been waiting for you for 31 years,” at the end of their first date.

Both Justin and Sophie have openly discussed the ups and downs in their marriage, emphasizing their strong bond and honesty with each other. They began dating in 2003, and Sophie was working as a TV personality at the time. She is also known for her charity work surrounding mental health and eating disorders.

Coincidentally, Sophie and Justin’s younger brother, Michel, were schoolmates. This separation marks the second time a Canadian prime minister has announced a separation while in office, with the first instance being Justin Trudeau’s parents, the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau, who divorced after announcing their split in 1977 following six years of marriage.
