Reports Reveal Campaign underway to Call for General Elections before Presidential Election

A campaign has reportedly been launched to secure the signatures of a majority of parliamentarians, advocating for a general election to precede the scheduled presidential election. Political sources reveal that both the party associated with Basil Rajapaksa, representing the government, and the opposition party led by Sajith Premadasa have initiated this campaign.

The proponents of this campaign argue that the objectives of both parties could be better achieved through a parliamentary election rather than a presidential one.

Responding to inquiries from Lankasara, a Member of Parliament from the Samagi Jana Balavega declined to comment on the matter.

According to constitutional provisions, the current president’s tenure is slated to conclude on November 18th. Initially, there were discussions within the ruling party’s Basil faction advocating for a presidential election before this deadline. However, there has been a shift towards prioritizing a parliamentary election to precede the scheduled presidential polls in November.
