SSP Padmini Weerasuriya, the Director (Investigations) of Bribery or Corruption Investigations Commission has been transferred with immediate effect. There was an earlier attempt to transfer her to Jaffna but it was thwarted following strong opposition in the society about her sudden transfer amidst the investigations she conducted there as a talented officer. The transfer was canceled then but this time she has been transferred to the Welfare Division of the Police Headquarters sources said to Lankasara.
SSP Nuwan Asanka in charge of the Nugegoda Division has been appointed as the Director of Investigation of the Bribery Commission. He had previously been appointed to the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption while serving in the CID. However, after the decision was postponed, he was absent from the Police Headquarters for a short period and was later appointed as the Officer in Charge of the Nugegoda Division.
Weerasuriya will go down in history as the first woman to hold the post of Director of Investigations of the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission. During her tenure, she is said to have impartially filed corruption cases against several senior police officers and several politicians, and there is now speculation as to whether the transfer was the result.
