One inmate has died after attempting to break out from the Bogambara old prison. He was shot by prison officials and later succumbed to his injuries. According to sources, five inmates in quarantine at the Bogambara old prison had attempted to escape last night (17) when the incident occured.
Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya stated that the inmate who died was incarcerated for the possession of 500 grams of heroin and murder.
Prison officials managed to nab three of the inmates. According to prison officials one out of the three has sustained injuries during the escape attempt and has now been hospitalized under tight security.
One inmate had managed to escape during the melee and a search is now on to locate him.
The five inmates who were detained in a ward of the old Bogambara Prison which has been converted into a quarantine center had attempted to escape by climbing on the roof of the main building of the prison. At present nearly 410 inmates have been sent to this prison for quarantine.
