BASL President answers queries regarding his role

All the announcements issued by the Bar Association so far were issued with the approval of the Executive Council, President’s Attorney Saliya Peiris, President of the Bar Association, President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris,

said in an interview with Hiru News.

He also mentioned that the Executive Council has approved the announcements made using Zoom technology or other electronic media in emergencies.

The journalist queried Saliya Peiris whether the executive council is an outfit full of his followers or those chosen by him, so they carry forward his will.

“No. It is the Bar Council representatives that appoint the executive council. Such accusations are made only by people who do not understand the constitution of the Bar Association.

He said that the BASL expressed concern about the attacks carried out on the houses of the ministers and the attack on the Galle Face Green.

He reiterated that the BASL does not condone violence at all.

He noted that Bar Association did not represent any suspect in Court who illegally entered government property. However, lawyers could appear in their private capacity on an individual basis.

He also denied the allegation that he continues to receive funds from various institutions. He said the US gives financial assistance to solve the country’s problems, and it is not financial aid given only to his association.

The chairman expressing his views said that the BASL always works according to a code of ethics. If someone violates the code of ethics, anybody can file a complaint. Both the BASLand Supreme Court will investigate the lawyers who act contrary to the accepted norms, ethics and the spirit of the law.

“We issue statements about social and economic issues because they are relevant to us as citizens of this country. I am not promoting any political ideology, and I am not canvassing for votes..” the chairman stressed
