It has been reveled that there are 984 women for every obstetric and gynecology bed in the country, according to a recent audit report released by the National Audit Office, indicating a potential strain on the healthcare system’s capacity to cater to the needs of women in terms of maternal and reproductive health.
The total count of obstetric and gynecology beds across Sri Lanka stands at 14,572. However, the audit findings indicate that this number does not align with the female population aged 15 and above, which is recorded at 14,342,549. As a result, there is a significant disparity between the available beds and the number of women who may require obstetric and gynecological care.
