Transparency International has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking to invalidate the decision made by the Council of Ministers to purchase medicines from two unregistered Indian pharmaceutical companies under the Indian loan scheme.

During the court session yesterday (22), Deputy Solicitor General Nirmalan Wigneswaran, representing the Attorney General, informed the court that the Attorney General would not appear for the respondents, including former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella and the suspects of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.

The petitioner alleges that the Cabinet’s decision to procure medicines from the two Indian companies violates proper procedure and poses a threat to public health, as well as potential misuse of public funds. Transparency International seeks the annulment of the decision to safeguard public interest.

The case was heard before a panel of judges comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Supreme Court Judges Gamini Amarasekara, and A.H.M.B. Nawaz.
