An investigation has been launched into the accident that occurred last night (11), in which former Speaker and MP Ashoka Ranwala was driving. A medical report has been requested to determine whether either driver was under the influence of alcohol, Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wutler said. He added that the police will act based on the findings and that rank will not be an obstacle to the inquiry.

The jeep driven by MP Ashoka Ranwala collided head-on with another car, injuring three people, including a small child who was travelling in the car.

Speaking at a media briefing held this morning (12), ASP Wutler said that two of the injured are receiving inpatient treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, while a six-month-old baby is being treated at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital.

Police attempted to obtain a statement from MP Ranwala, but this was not possible yesterday as he was receiving inpatient treatment at the National Hospital.
No arrests have been made so far.
