Military units have been withdrawn from the Bandatharippu Army Camp in Jaffna, which had been in use since 2012, and the land was officially handed over to the Chandipayee Divisional Secretary yesterday (28).
The troops previously stationed at Bandatharippu have now been reassigned to the Araly Army Camp in Jaffna.
Last week, military units from the Sulipuram Army Camp were also withdrawn, and the land was handed over to the Jaffna Government Agent’s Office to facilitate civilian resettlement.
Army camps that were established during the war for the security of Jaffna have now begun vacating civilian lands. So far, the Sri Lanka Army has handed over nearly 2,000 acres of land in various parts of Jaffna to Divisional Secretaries and the Government Agent’s Office.
Before withdrawing from these areas, all landmines planted for camp protection were removed. However, many of the buildings have been left intact as they were at the time the military units vacated the sites.
