The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that the Anti-Terrorism Bill has not been legally tabled. This revelation came during a hearing on a petition filed by Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, a Member of Parliament from the National People’s Power party.
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Nerinpulle, representing the Attorney General, conveyed that the Acting Parliamentary Secretary General had informed him that the draft of the Anti-Terrorism Bill had not been properly tabled in parliament.
President’s Counsel Nigel Hatch, who appeared for the petitioner, argued that since the bill was included in the parliamentary agenda, any citizen had the right to submit a petition under Article 121 of the Constitution.
The Supreme Court has ordered the submission of the relevant letter by Thursday (19) and scheduled a hearing for that date.
