Unsorted garbage collected from Kandy city during the Sacred Tooth Relic exposition will be transported to Colombo for incineration, says Kandy City Commissioner Indika Abeysinghe. As there are no adequate resources to incinerate the waste in Kandy without sorting, steps have been taken to transport it to Colombo.

The Kandy City Cleanup Operation following the Sacred Tooth Relic exposition has been successfully completed, according to Kandy Municipal Medical Officer Dr. Pasan Jayasinghe.

From 6 p.m. yesterday until this morning, over 3,000 volunteers committed themselves to completing the cleaning task, despite the rain. About 300 volunteers were from the University of Peradeniya. Members of police environment committees, voluntary organizations, scouts, rural communities, Kandy city residents, and talented young groups from across Sri Lanka also participated enthusiastically.

A prayer meeting was held to provide food, tea, and coffee for the volunteers.

So far, the city has been cleaned to the point where not even a single piece of paper remains. The collected garbage was disposed of at the Gohagoda dump this morning.

By 4:40 p.m. yesterday, the Kandy Municipal Council had dumped 569 metric tonnes of garbage at the Gohagoda dump. A day-and-night cleaning operation by voluntary organizations commenced afterward.

The Kandy Municipal Medical Officer also revealed that the pavement around the Kandy Lake Circle will be cleaned tonight.

“No one should have any doubts about coming to Mahanuwara,” he assured the public.
