Reliable sources reveal that Gemunu Wijeratne, commonly known as “Bus Gemunu” and the Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Association, has been persistently pressuring the Ministry of Health to reassign his daughter to a hospital in Colombo. His daughter is currently serving her mandatory four-year post-doctoral stint in a remote area, as required by regulations.
Doctors who complete their internships must work in underserved areas for four years. Although his daughter is already stationed in a challenging location, Gemunu’s ongoing demands have reportedly caused significant frustration among ministry officials, according to ministry sources.
The sources also disclosed that since the tenure of the former Health Secretary, efforts have been made to secure a transfer for his daughter, a graduate of SAITM. These attempts have continued unabated.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health confirmed that Gemunu had recently requested a temporary transfer for his daughter to a hospital in Colombo. However, the spokesperson declined to comment further, directing queries to the Director General of Health Services.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association, Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa, stated that such a request had been made previously but was rejected by the Transfer Board.
