The Election Commission is set to meet today to arrive at a final decision on the date to hold the upcoming General election. Members of the EC will meet at 10 am today at the Commission for the deciding discussion. Accordingly, at the end of it, the EC will announce the date for the election as well as the date for the postal voting and the preferential numbers for the candidates.
The upcoming election is expected to cost the taxpayer close to Rs 9 Billion. Speaking at a press conference yesterday Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshpriay said the cost of the election is estimated to rise by Rs. 2 Billion. Earlier the EC had estimated it would cost Rs. 7 Billion. However additional staff and health care staff requirements due to Covid 19 has added to the election costs.
