A representative of a German investment company, who arrived for discussions on a pilot large-scale waste management project, returned disappointed after the Central Province Governor suddenly cancelled the meeting, sources said.
The meeting was scheduled for the 15th in Kandy, as previously informed by the Governor’s office, and the German representative arrived accordingly. However, at the last minute, the Governor’s office informed them that the meeting would be postponed indefinitely, a local spokesperson for the company has told Sunday Mawbima Newspaper.
The company, Recycle Energy, had planned to bring in a foreign direct investment of USD 100 million. Their plans included producing fertilizer using the 125 metric tons of solid waste collected daily from Kandy city and surrounding local government areas, installing a cold storage facility to preserve agricultural products using electricity generated from waste, and launching a third-phase plastic waste recycling project as part of their pilot initiative.
Although the company had received Cabinet approval to proceed under a previous regime, implementation stalled due to the prevailing situation in the country. The official stated that these investors had renewed their interest in Sri Lanka after the new government came to power, but the sudden cancellation of meetings had disappointed them. He added it was regrettable that such weaknesses were still visible despite the change in administration.
