Emerald Clothing has stepped in to continue the core operations of Hela Clothing, following the latter’s recent restructuring due to liquidity challenges.
The intervention is primarily focused on stabilizing manufacturing activities, protecting thousands of jobs, and maintaining confidence among international buyers who rely on Sri Lanka’s apparel exports.
Emerald Clothing stated that it has already initiated operational adjustments to ensure that production continues without disruption. The company emphasized that maintaining continuity in supply and sustaining Sri Lanka’s reputation as a reliable sourcing destination are key priorities.
As part of the transition, major manufacturing facilities located in Thihariya and Palapathawala will continue operations under Emerald’s management. In addition, processing and development functions in the United Kingdom and the United States will also be overseen by the company.
“Our main objective is to ensure continuity and stability by keeping factories running, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring uninterrupted supply to consumers. This is a step we have taken to maintain confidence in Sri Lanka as a reliable sourcing destination,” said Mohomed Salim Suhurdeen, representing the investment group behind the move.
Industry analysts note that the apparel sector, one of Sri Lanka’s largest contributors to export earnings and employment, is currently facing mounting pressure from global market shifts and domestic financial constraints. Disruptions to major manufacturers, they warn, could have ripple effects across supply chains and export performance.
Hela Clothing, a leading Sri Lankan apparel exporter with a strong presence in international markets, has been undergoing restructuring of certain business units amid financial strain. The latest intervention by Emerald Clothing is expected to provide much-needed stability while ensuring that buyer commitments continue to be met.
