The President Ranil Wickramasinghe today instructed the police to take immediate measures to prevent taking small children to the public protests as human shields.
The President says that it is a serious offence to take children to parades.
The President gave these instructions to the police today (12) during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat on the protection of children’s rights and the protection of children’s human rights.
“The welfare of children and youth shall be promoted by the State with special efforts to ensure that they develop physically, mentally, morally, religiously and socially, and to protect them from exploitation and discrimination.” The President said that “must” is under Article 27, Sub-section 13 of the Constitution and emphasized that protecting children is a prime responsibility of the government.
