Dr Hansajaya Gunawardene was banned from performing surgeries following the death of a patient.

The surgeon, Dr Hasanjaya Gunawardena, attached to the Ragama Teaching Hospital, who caused a furor following the death of Budhika Harshani, whom he operated on, has been restrained from performing surgeries forthwith.

Buddhika Harshini, a lady from Wattala, died following surgery at Hemas Hospital, Wattala.

The Deputy Director General of Medical Services, Dr G Wijesuriya, said that a ban has been imposed on the surgeon until the completion of the investigation by the Private Hospitals Regulatory Council of the Ministry of Health.

It is also said that the Private Hospital Development Division of the Ministry of Health has requested a report from Hemas Hospital, where the surgery was performed, about the incident on that day, and it is said that the report has already been received.

Accordingly, an investigation has been initiated in connection with the hospital by Dr Dhammika Alahapperuma, Director of the Private Hospital Development Division of the Ministry of Health.

After being operated on by specialist Dr Hasanjaya Gunawardena at Wattala Hemas Hospital on the 1st of last month, the victim, Buddhika Harshini, became seriously ill and was admitted to Ragama Teaching Hospital.

She died while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital for 25 days.

Budhika Harshani’s brother, Prasad Dharmavikrama, had lodged a complaint with the Wattala police saying that her death was suspicious.
