Basil Rajapaksa, the party’s founder and finance minister, has orfered to the heads of all local government bodies under Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna , to turn off all street lights from today (07) to March 31. He has issued this request in the backdrop of prevailing severe power crisis.
In his letter Mr Rajapaksa has described the situation as lack of rains, the hydropower plants have become completely inoperable and the country has become overwhelmed due to the huge production costs incurred per unit of power plants to fill the 30 percent capacity gap and the very limited dollar reserves required to obtain fuel. In his letter, he called for the decision to be implemented as it was a national duty considering the complex situation.
The Minister also directed that if there are viable alternatives in daily life for saving electricity, they should be implemented.
