Urenium ship removed from Hambantota Port

Anchors offshore for repairs
The ship contained uranium hexachloride, a radioactive substance used as fuel in the ship’s nuclear power plants which arrive without prior approval to Hambantota has left from harbor premises Director General of the Atomic Energy regulatory Council Dr. H.L Anil Ranjith told Lankasara.

Although the ship was operating between China and Europe, it was brought to the port of Hambantota due to a mechanical failure. However, the Director General said that he had ordered the immediate removal of the radioactive material contained vessel due to its lack of prior approval. He added that legal action would be taken against the German company Wilhelmson Meridean, the ship’s agent, for bringing the ship into the country without prior permission and that the company had a local representative.

The MV GCC Naples, which sailed under the state flag of Antigua and Barbados, anchored offshore , 3KM away from Hambanthota and underwent repairs.

The Director General of Atomic Energy Regulatiory Council further stated that the ship was removed from the port at around 10.30 am as per the notice issued at around 10.00 am after inquiring into all the facts.
