Mrs. Sandamali Chandrasekara, who served as the Chairperson of the Lanka Sugar Company, has resigned from her position with immediate effect.
She submitted her resignation letter yesterday (17) to the Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development,. Sunil Handunnetti.
In her letter, she states that she has sincerely contributed to the progress of the company from the day she assumed duties as Chairperson.
She further notes that Lanka Sugar Company operates under a unique legal framework and that she has acted strictly within that legal system during her tenure.
However, she states that certain politicians attempted to use their political authority to influence her to act in violation of the institution’s legal framework.
She emphasizes that during her term in office, she cannot act against the relevant circulars, regulations, and established legal procedures.
The letter further states that under such circumstances, she is no longer able to perform her duties. Therefore, in accordance with her professional ethics, she has decided to resign from the post of Chairperson of Lanka Sugar Company.
Earlier, Nuwan Dharmaratne, the Chief Operating Officer of Pelwatta Sugar Company, a subsidiary of Lanka Sugar Company, also resigned, citing political interference by the subject minister.
