As of 2025, Sri Lankan business tycoon Ishara Nanayakkara has secured a place among South Asia’s wealthiest individuals, with an estimated fortune of $1.6 billion. The chairman of LOLC Holdings, Nanayakkara, controls a vast portfolio of businesses through LOLC and Browns Group, spanning financial services, microfinance, insurance, agriculture, manufacturing, and leisure. Under his leadership, LOLC has expanded into over 10 countries and grown into Africa’s largest tea producer, marking a significant milestone for a Sri Lankan enterprise on the global stage.

Nanayakkara now surpasses Dhammika Perera as the richest person in Sri Lanka, standing alongside other high-profile billionaires in the region.

South Asia’s Wealth Leaders
Topping the regional list is Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, whose \$118 billion fortune towers above all others. Ambani’s empire spans telecom (Jio), petrochemicals, energy, and retail, solidifying his status as the undisputed business magnate of South Asia.

In Pakistan, the wealthiest figure of Pakistani origin is  Shahid Khan $13.5 billion), the U.S.-based owner of Flex-N-Gate, the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL), and Fulham F.C. Within Pakistan itself, Mian Muhammad Mansha leads with around \$3 billion, heading the diversified Nishat Group.

In Bangladesh, controversial business figure Mossa Bin Shamsher claims a $12 billion fortune from global investments and arms brokerage, though his wealth remains unverified by rankings such as Forbes.

Binod Chaudhary, best known as King of Noodle for his Wai Wai noodle brand, holds a net worth of around $1.6 billion through his multinational conglomerate, CG Corp Global.

Ambani’s Dominance
Despite the impressive fortunes of these tycoons, Ambani’s wealth eclipses them all, nearly ten times greater than Shahid Khan’s and far exceeding the combined fortunes of the top billionaires in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Whether measured by scale, diversification, or global reach, Ambani remains in a league of his own.
