The Police Special Task Force has seized over 10 kilograms of Kush cannabis, estimated to be worth around one billion rupees, during two separate operations in the Gothatuwa and Kaduwela areas on August 6.
The raids were carried out by officers from the STF’s Special Operations Unit, following intelligence received regarding large-scale drug trafficking. In the Manigamulla area, within the Gothatuwa Police Division, a suspect was arrested with 5.154 kilograms of Kush, a mobile phone, and one hundred thousand rupees in cash believed to be proceeds from narcotics.
A second suspect was taken into custody near the Kaduwela entrance of the Southern Expressway. He was found with 5.106 kilograms of Kush, a car, and one hundred and fifty thousand rupees in suspected drug money. He was later handed over to the Gothatuwa Police for further investigations.
Police said the suspects, aged 35 and 64, are residents of Gothatuwa and Colombo 14. Investigations revealed that one of them had previously been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in 2021 and was released after serving a detention period of one year and eight months, as directed by the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
It was also revealed that the same suspect had served as a land manager for an individual believed to be linked to the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.
According to authorities, the consignment of Kush was supplied by an individual known as Chappa, a close associate of Dematagoda Chaminda, a well-known underworld figure currently serving a prison sentence.
Further investigations are underway.
