The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced that the Number Portability (NP) service will be implemented from next year, allowing mobile users to change their service provider while retaining the same phone number.
In a statement, the Commission said that several steps have already been taken towards implementing the number portability service.

As part of the process, initial discussions were held with telephone operators, and a comprehensive implementation plan was developed.
A public consultation paper was published in 2021, and feedback was obtained from all relevant stakeholders.
Following further discussions with telecommunications operators, an appropriate technical model was selected. A dedicated company, Lanka Number Portability Services (Guarantee) Limited, was then established with the participation of all fixed and mobile operators to implement and manage the number portability system.
The TRCSL has granted the necessary license to this company to carry out the service.
The Attorney General’s Department has also approved the rules and guidelines for number portability, which were prepared in coordination with the operators.
Once the number portability system is fully established and the networks of telecom operators are upgraded, the service will officially begin.
The TRCSL added that the public will be informed once the implementation is complete and the service is ready for use.
