Nuwara Eliya Police arrested eight Indonesian nationals on Monday (3rd) afternoon for staying at a mosque without valid passports or visas.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Police Staion of Nuwara Eliya , the highest city in Sri Lanka , visited the mosque and detained the individuals. It was revealed that the suspects had arrived in Sri Lanka two months ago on tourist visas, which had since expired. At the time of their arrest, the suspects did not have their passports or visas, claiming they had handed them over to the Indonesian Embassy in Sri Lanka for visa renewal.
Investigations also revealed that the suspects had visited Hatton and Nawalapitiya before arriving in NuwaraEliya. The group, aged between 25 and 65, stated that 191 others had entered Sri Lanka along with them and were traveling to various parts of the island.
The police have initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of these additional individuals. The Indonesian Embassy has been informed of the arrests, and the suspects were scheduled to be presented before the NuwaraEliya Magistrate’s Court on Monday (3rd).
