A BMW and a Mitsubishi jeep recently discovered at a house in Kandy have been found to be illegally assembled. The Kandy Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit has begun an investigation to arrest a person reportedly related to former Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena.
On August 12, the police obtained a travel ban against Isuru Seram, who is said to be the brother-in-law of the former Minister’s daughter. Officers have visited his residence in Aniwatta several times in an attempt to arrest him, but he has not been home.
Expert reports confirm that the BMW was assembled from various parts, while the chassis number of the jeep has been scratched off. Authorities suspect that the jeep may belong to the government. The estimated combined value of these two vehicles exceeds Rs. 60 million.
The vehicles were seized on August 20, following a tip-off to police. Senior Superintendent of Police for the Kandy Division, Mr. Anuruddha Bandaranaike, instructed a team led by Chief Inspector Thilak Samaranayake, OIC of the Kandy Divisional Criminal Investigation Division, to conduct further investigations.
