Education Ministry Secretary Thilaka Jayasundare has formed a five-member committee to investigate the suicide of a 15-year-old female student from an international school, reported by the Daily Mirror. The incident occurred last Monday.
The committee, made up of three additional secretaries and two directors, has been tasked with visiting Colombo International School, where the student studied. The Ministry is seeking more information, particularly due to a connection with a previous tragic incident involving two students who fell to their deaths at Altair Apartments three months ago. Initial investigations revealed that the student who died last Monday after falling from Colombo Lotus Tower was a close friend of the two previous victims, all of whom were classmates.
Education Secretary Jayasundare acknowledged that the Ministry of Education currently has no authority over international schools, as they are registered under the Companies Act. However, if the school cooperates with the committee, valuable insights might be gained. She also emphasized the need to amend the Education Act to give the Ministry the power to regulate international schools.
