The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has set a spending limit of Rs. 109 per voter for the upcoming Presidential election campaign. A gazette notification announcing this was issued last night. With 17,140,354 eligible voters, each candidate can spend up to Rs. 1.862 million on their campaign, according to election sources.

These limits were set under the No. 03 of the 2023 Election Expenditure Act. Before making this decision, the Commission held discussions with candidates and political parties. Some parties suggested increasing the spending limit per voter to Rs. 250 to Rs. 400, compared to the previous Rs. 20 per voter. However, after several discussions, the Commission decided to set the limit at Rs. 109 per voter.

Presidential Candidates Must Adhere to Election Budget Limits or Risk Losing Office
