The Supreme Court issued an order to the Secretary of the Defense Ministry, Retired General Kamal Gunaratne, the Police Commission, and Deshabandu Thennakoon to provide an explanation before the court regarding the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by former Director of the Criminal Investigations Division, Retired Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara.

Abeysekara filed the FR petition stating he has received death threats and an assassination attempt, thus requesting increased protection.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court informed the notice to be served on the respondent parties.

This petition was heard before Supreme Court judges Vijith Malalgoda, Murdu Fernando, and Yasanta Kodagoda.

Deshabandu Tennakoon, the National Police Commission, the Defense Secretary, the Attorney General, and others have been named as respondents in these petitions.

Abeysekara was a controversial police officer after the Easter Sunday Attack and was in custody, but he was later released.

Upon his retirement, Abeysekara openly supported the National People’s Power (NPP) and participated in several press conferences held by the party.
