Deepening the internal disagreement within the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), the Matara District convention of the SLPP passed a resolution to remove MP Sagara Kariyawasam as the party’s secretary.
During the convention, SLPP Matara District members proposed Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana as the party’s new secretary.
The convention was chaired by Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera. At the convention, three proposals were presented. Under these proposals, SLPP members decided that support should be given to President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the forthcoming presidential election. Another proposal saw SLPP Matara District members deciding to withdraw the party’s decision to field a candidate for the forthcoming presidential election.
Speaking to the media, Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that a doubt has arisen whether the current secretary general of the party is acting upon the guidance of the party’s leader or another party. He also pointed out that for the past few years, the party’s general secretary has been working in such a way that the party is divided. Accordingly, in order to maintain party unity, Minister Wijesekera suggested that the current general secretary should be removed and a new secretary should be appointed.
According to reports, more than 400 people, including former provincial council and local council members, participated in this district conference.
