The canteen catering to the doctors at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital has been ordered to temporarily cease its operations due to significant concerns regarding the quality and safety of the food being served. Kitsiri Herath, the Chief Municipal Health Inspector of the Nuwara Eliya Municipality, highlighted that the canteen was found to be operating in conditions deemed unfit for human consumption.

This action follows an emergency inspection conducted by health inspectors from the Nuwara Eliya Municipality on yesterday (12). Upon thorough assessment, it was deemed imperative to issue a temporary closure order for the canteen run by the Hospital Welfare Association at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital. Kitsiri Herath emphasized the necessity for addressing the identified shortcomings and bringing the canteen back under the supervision of municipal health inspectors once rectified.

During this emergency inspection, further alarming findings were unearthed, leading to the decision to take legal action against the owners of eight additional restaurants. These establishments were found guilty of various infractions, including selling food unfit for human consumption, unhygienic food preparation practices, failure to adhere to health regulations, and inadequate provision of basic facilities for dining.

Efforts will be ongoing to rectify the deficiencies identified during the inspection process, and stringent measures will be implemented to prevent similar lapses in the future.
