The Karapitiya Teaching Hospital’s pediatric cardiac catheterization unit is currently facing a critical situation as both of its specialist doctors are unavailable.
While one specialist has left the country, the other is abroad for training.
This shortage has prompted the transfer of pediatric patients to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo, leading to concerns about patient care, increased costs, and potential risks to the children’s health.
Hospital sources have highlighted the serious implications of this shortage, emphasizing that the absence of specialized medical professionals in the pediatric cardiac catheterization unit has a direct impact on patient care. The situation has resulted in delays in essential medical tests and procedures, potentially putting the lives of young patients at risk.
Moreover, this has added significant inconvenience and distress for the parents of the affected children.
