A remarkable culinary venture has emerged in Sri Lanka as the nation’s very first underground restaurant experience opens its doors within the depths of the Bogala Graphite Mine.

Situated an impressive 124 meters below the Earth’s surface, this subterranean dining venue provides an extraordinary setting for approximately 15 guests at a time.

The roots of this innovative establishment trace back to the year 1865 when the Bogala Graphite Mine was founded. Housed within one of the mine’s donas, the restaurant offers a unique twist: though underground areas often lack telephone signal, this remarkable dining space is equipped with WiFi to enable mobile phone usage.

Currently, the Bogala graphite mine reaches a substantial depth of 476 meters, around 1,585 feet. However, it is at the 124-meter mark that visitors can relish an exquisite culinary experience at the aptly named “Dona” restaurant.

This pioneering venture combines gastronomy and education, allowing guests to relish both fine cuisine and a firsthand look into the mining industry.
