The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has written to Acting IGP C.D Wickramaratne on the recent collapse of a house in Buwelikada, Kandy which resulted in the death of one of its members, Attorney at Law Achala Ekanayake and her family. The BASL in its letter has raised concerns as to how there is a trend of not taking any further action by state bodies after initial investigations are done when such an incident occurs.

It noted that it is concerned about the incident for several reasons. “We are naturally concerned about the death of our member in these circumstances and we are equally concerned that this sort of incident cannot affect another human being irrespective of the standing of such person” it said. The BASL also noted that there have also been accusations of investigations not being properly conducted in similar situations.

In the letter the BASL said it will be involved in any pending proceedings and also noted that all aspects on possible negligence regarding the incident must be investigated especially to do with the construction of the collapsed building. “In the event of any criminal offense being disclosed please take appropriate action to ensure that the public confidence is not affected” it further added.
