With the winning of the Bronze medal in the 100 me men’s event, Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon becomes the first asian to win a medal for 100m event in the Commonwealth Games history.
Qualified for the 100 meter final of the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, Britain, Yupun Abeykon completed the race in 10.14 seconds and received his historic medal.
So far, no Asian has won a medal in this event and thus he has a record as the fastest runner in Asia. The time difference between Yupun Abeykon and the South African athlete who took the second place was 0.01 seconds.
The first place in this race was won by the Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala who finished the race in 10.02 seconds, the second place and the silver medalist Akani Simbine of South Africa finished the race in 10.13 seconds and Yupun Abekon finished the race in 10.14 seconds.
After 1998, Yupun Abeykoon will also make history as the only Sri Lankan athlete to get a medal for an athletics event at a Commonwealth Games.
